10 potential GM candidates for the Redskins if they part with Bruce Allen
The Chiefs don’t just have the Andy Reid coaching tree. They also have a solid executive tree in recent seasons.
Several successful general managers have either started with Chiefs or worked under other GMs in that front office. Currently, there are three recent Chiefs front office staffers in prominent roles across the NFL (John Dorsey, Browns; Chris Ballard, Colts; Brett Veach, Chiefs). And for the most part, these executives have built solid teams.
The next executive up for a promotion is Borgonzi. And he could easily get it this offseason. Borgonzi, who is currently serving as the Chiefs’ Director of Football Operations, has been with the organization for 10 years and has learned quite a bit from the aforementioned executives that he has been surrounded by.
Additionally, it doesn’t hurt that Borgonzi has worked under Reid. He is one of the most respected talent developers in the league and has a knack for coaching up talent as well as identifying it in the draft.
The Chiefs front office has done a great job of identifying talent in recent seasons. They were smart enough to trade up for Patrick Mahomes, after all. They also have drafted guys like Chris Jones, Tyreek Hill, and Juan Thornhill outside of the first round and those picks have helped their defense. They also have turned Kansas City into a free-agent destination and have added the likes of Tyrann Mathieu, Mitchell Schwartz, and Sammy Watkins to the team in recent seasons.
So, it’s safe to say that Borgonzi knows what success looks like. If he can interview well and convince owners that he can replicate the success of other former Chiefs staffers, he could quickly become a hot name on the market.
It also wouldn’t hurt his cause if the team he interviews with has an interest in Eric Bieniemy. The Redskins are rumored to have an interest in the Chiefs offensive coordinator so perhaps if he’s their top candidate, Borgonzi would be a sensible hire.
Like some other names on this list, Borgonzi may not be a well-known guy. But he could easily pan out if he lands in the right scenario.
