The day after Bruce Allen, what’s next for the Redskins?

3. The Mystery Meat (MM).

This is the largely anonymous nobody that has next-to-no known reputation or track record. Think the “Jim Zorn” of General Managers.

This would be the hire made because Dan Snyder believes he is smarter than everyone else…that he is able to find that diamond in the rough. MM is the undrafted free agent of player acquisitions. This is the route with possibly the biggest range of outcomes.

There’s always that 1-in-a-million chance that Snyder gets lucky here and hires a transformational leader from out of nowhere. But more likely, this route results in a massive flame-out within 2-3 years.

My Prediction: Snyder actually knows he doesn’t have the equity with the fan base to even try bringing in Mystery Meat.

4. The Unproven Up-And-Comer (UAAC).

Kyle Smith is the definition of the UAAC. He’s well-respected in a bad organization. He seems to have a good reputation nationally. He’s worked his way up. He’s toiled in relative obscurity and might just be the next big thing. Plenty of similar UAACs have come before Kyle with mixed results across all of professional sports.

Another guy to throw in this category is Louis Riddick, who has made it clear he’s interested in following in Mike Mayock’s footprints and parlaying a TV analyst career into a General Manager role. Almost every successful executive and coach has, at one time or another, been a UAAC. And for every John Schneider, Billy Beane and Theo Epstein, there’s a long list of young flame-outs.

My Prediction: Kyle Smith will be a great General Manager if he ever gets the opportunity to fully and completely run the football operations of an organization. If Snyder gives him the job this year, though, it will be an indication that Snyder is not really ready/willing to finally relinquish control of his team and let the football people run it with all the resources they need and none of the meddling they don’t.

And the same is likely true of a Riddick hire. The only caveat to this is if these guys are the TA hired by a powerful head coach.
