2. The Tag-Along (TA).

This is a GM approved by a big splash coaching hire…someone trusted by a powerful head coach to bring in the right types of players, but would have little innate power to affect change in the organization apart from the coach’s delegation.

Were Snyder to somehow lure a Bill Cowher or Lincoln Riley or Matt Rhule or Urban Meyer or Nick Saban to coach the team, those guys would essentially pick their own GM. This option would essentially be an attempt to copy the Patriot’s structure and is a viable way to ensure the entire football operation is on the same page.

Unlike the previous list, I have no names for the actual TAs, but the point of this hire would be that, essentially, the head coach is the individual with ultimate power in the football operations. This direction has historically had extremely varied results.

Infamously unsuccessful examples include Chip Kelly in Philly, Bill Parcells in Dallas, Nick Saban in Miami, Rex Ryan in New York, and Jim Harbaugh San Francisco. But this is also the structure of two of the most successful runs in NFL history, with Jimmy Johnson in Dallas and Bill Belichick in New England.

Most recently, the Raiders are trying this with Jon Gruden. We’ll see if he is able to build a winner. There’s no denying this model can be successful, but it takes the right coach and a patient owner.

My Prediction: Snyder will entertain this option with Urban Meyer, Matt Rhule, Mike McCarthy, and possibly Bill Cowher. Ultimately, the successful hire of a powerful Head Coach and a TA would depend on the extent to which Snyder allowed them to overhaul the entire organization without his interference or impatient meddling.
