Redskins vs. Eagles: Keys to victory in Week 15 of the 2019 season
By Kyle Hundley
5. Redskins must have a big game from Montez Sweat
With Ryan Kerrigan now out for the season, it will be up to Montez Sweat to replace his production. When Kerrigan missed his first game against Carolina, Sweat looked like a different player on the left side in place of him. He was able to notch 1.5 sacks in the first half before eventually leaving with an injury. Sweat finally looked like the game=changer many thought he’d be when they drafted him.
Assuming Sweat lines up on the left side in Kerrigan’s place again, he might be able to generate some production as Pro Bowl tackle Lane Johnson is in trouble of missing the game and will likely face Halapoulivaati Vaitai instead.
Vaitai is a reliable tackle. But he’s not as good as Johnson is. Sweat must win this matchup and get to Carson Wentz.
If Sweat can get to Wentz and make him uneasy back there, he may force him into some mistakes. The Redskins had just one sack and generated little pressure on Wentz in the first matchup. Having time in the pocket, he threw for 300 yards and three touchdowns in a comeback effort.
If Sweat (and the rush as a whole) is unable to get Wentz again, he may well repeat his strong Week 1 performance.
