Dud No. 2 – The Dwayne Haskins situation

I won’t call Dwayne Haskins a dud, because Sunday was almost a no-win situation for him. But it’s around this point that we need to see more, and while there have been glimpses of his upside visible, much more consistency needs to be attained.

On Sunday, Haskins didn’t get a fair shot at consistency, but the blame goes around for that. Haskins clearly hurt his ankle early on in the game, and his limping only got worse as the game progressed.

Haskins’ limp eroded at his ability to function as a quarterback, and things like footwork, pressure avoidance, and even simple things like handoffs seemed strenuous. Bill Callahan later said in his press conference that there was no medical reason to pull Haskins, but the tape suggested otherwise, and J.P. Finlay reported that Haskins had been playing on a sprained ankle.

If Haskins wants to stay in and compete, that’s great. But there comes a point where the coaches need to intercede, with the best interests of the player in mind. Haskins needed to come out of the Packers game, and instead, he stayed until the end. It makes for a decent storyline on Haskins’ part, but it was a unreasonable risk that didn’t need to be taken, and that kind of unawareness reflects very poorly on Callahan.
