Stud No. 1 – Redskins RB Derrius Guice (and Adrian Peterson)

For a long time, the Redskins selection of Derrius Guice in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft seemed like an empty investment. After Guice was placed on injured reserve after Week 1 of the 2019 season, many called him a bust prematurely. On Sunday, Guice came out and delivered a devastating stiff arm to the doubters, both literally and figuratively.

The Redskins didn’t funnel carries to Guice; Adrian Peterson actually had more, with 13 to Guice’s 10. But with his 10 carries, Guice was electric, amassing 129 yards and two touchdowns, highlighting his performance with a crushing stiff arm on Carolina’s Shaq Thompson as he rumbled down the field.

Guice resurrected his career against Carolina, and he should have an increased role in the offense moving forward, given his combination of youth, athleticism, and physicality. Peterson also proved he still has something left in the tank, with 99 yards and a score on 13 carries. Together, Guice and Peterson combined for 228 yards and three touchdowns on 23 attempts.

Bill Callahan’s run-first philosophy has been the cause of ire this season, and with reason, but on Sunday, Callahan’s game plan worked as well as it could. It won’t always happen that way; the Panthers gave Washington a lot of breathing room. But the Redskins took advantage, and dominated as a result. In Guice, they saw a flash of Beast Mode upside.
