A clip of Redskins quarterback Dwayne Haskins went viral on Sunday, and while reactions were mixed, Washington’s players have been consistent in their own interpretations.

In the clip in question, Washington Redskins quarterback Dwayne Haskins is seen desperately asking his offensive linemen what he can do to help them. At the time, Haskins and his linemen were in the midst of a 34-17 walloping at the hands of the now 3-7 New York Jets. Haskins was sacked six times in the outing, and it was clear that he and his line weren’t always on the same page.

The clip of Haskins quickly circulated on the internet, and interpretations of the rookie’s actions varied. Some were excited to see Haskins stepping up into a leadership role, while others saw Haskins attempting to deflect blame on his linemen.

As I wrote a couple days ago, people will see what they want to see in the clip of Haskins, but most players are treating it as a non-story, and some, including veteran offensive tackle Donald Penn, are actually encouraged by the initiative and passion Haskins showed in that moment. In an NBC Sports Washington article by Ethan Cadeaux, Penn expresses his understanding, and his confidence in Haskins and his work ethic. Here are several quotes from Penn, pieced into one.

“His heart is into it,” the 36-year old Penn said of Haskins. “He had a nice little speech at the end. We have to make it easier on him. It’s not flowing right now. We have to figure out how to get stuff flowing. [Haskins] is a young guy trying to be a leader. He’s trying to step in and help out as much as possible. He’s done a great job for what position he’s been put in. My hat’s off to him. He’s working hard and you can tell. He’s trying to win. Everybody wants to win.”

Haskins is still growing into his role as a leader for the Redskins, and the Redskins veterans seem to understand that reality. For the most part, they’re pleased with his progress and his willingness to take charge. Haskins has shown tangible growth in each on-field outing, and off the field, he’s reportedly shown a heightened sense of urgency since his elevation to the starting unit.

For now, Washington remains on the search for their first win with Haskins as their quarterback. Even with the focus on development, the taste of victory is a coveted item. Perhaps, with more time working with one another and growing more comfortable, the Redskins players can earn what they seek.
