Former Redskins QB Kirk Cousins kicks habits in primetime
Bettors were quick to make the NFL’s Sunday night matchup their lock of the week when they saw Kirk Cousins helming the away team. With the Redskins, Cousins was known for, among other things, his primetime woes.
Coming into his Sunday night game against the Cowboys, Cousins was 6-13 in primetime games over the course of his career. Many expected him to falter on Sunday night, against a particular team which he also struggled to win against in Washington.
Instead, Cousins tacked on a victory, as the Vikings stuck out a hard-fought 28-24 win. It took a little help from the Cowboys’ own coaching staff on the game’s second-to-last drive, but Cousins’ efficient 23-32, 220-yard, two-touchdown outing was enough to help Minnesota reach a record of 7-3 on the year. They’re just one game back in the NFC North race, and they’re gaining some breathing room in the Wild Card race.
It will be interesting to see if Cousins’ Vikings can keep up this level of play. In Washington, Cousins was known to have high peaks and low valleys. In Minnesota, he’s slowly leveling out as a productive, capable passer. But he won’t soon be able to toss his primetime woes aside. The Vikings have three more primetime games in 2019, against the Seahawks, Chargers, and Packers. Cousins will have to stay the course, if he wants to truly quiet the doubters.
