Redskins: 30 candidates who could potentially replace Jay Gruden as head coach
Previously: 20
Since 2004, Dave Toub has been a special teams coordinator at the NFL level. He has coached for the Chicago Bears and Kansas City Chiefs, and he routinely has fielded some of the league’s best special teams units.
Toub simply knows how to coach kickers, punters, and returners. The Chiefs always seem to be a threat to have a return touchdown and frequently are able to make game-changing plays with their special teams.
Special teams coordinators don’t always get a lot of love, but Toub, 57, has been an assistant head coach to Andy Reid for the past two seasons. That will make him just a bit more intriguing and the disciplined play of his special teams will be encouraging to teams investigating him as a potential head coach hire.
Toub may not be the flashiest name, but his discipline and special teams prowess could intrigue the Redskins enough to take a look. Perhaps an outside-the-box hire like Toub could be just the infusion of stability that the team needs moving forward.
