Redskins: 30 candidates who could potentially replace Jay Gruden as head coach
Previously: Unranked
It seems highly unlikely that Meyer would coach in the NFL. He has only ever been a college coach and most recently, he retired from Ohio State due to health issues and returned to broadcasting.
Of course, that isn’t the first time that Meyer has retired for that reason. He did so when he was the Gators coach and then just a year later, he went to work for the Buckeyes. The same thing could happen this time around. If he’s healthy, he could come coach.
It seems likely that Meyer would return to the collegiate ranks. But if the Redskins wanted to make a splash, Meyer could qualify. He worked with Dwayne Haskins and Terry McLaurin at Ohio State, so he’s already familiar with them. And perhaps in his system, the team could find some success.
That said, it doesn’t seem very likely that Meyer would interest many NFL teams. He simply doesn’t have the experience needed to be an NFL head coach. And after a year out of college ball, it doesn’t make sense for him to make the jump to the next level.
While Meyer’s name may be mentioned in connection to Haskins, don’t expect him to actually get the job with the Redskins.
