The New Orleans Saints have long had one of the league’s better and more consistent offenses. A lot of that is thanks to Sean Payton, who has proven to be one of the league’s better head coaches over the course of the past decade. But his assistants deserve credit as well.

One particularly interesting assistant is Dan Campbell. The former NFL tight end is in his fourth year as a member of the Saints’ staff serving as the team’s assistant head coach and tight ends coach. He’s just 43 and the experience that he has with the Saints could make him an intriguing coaching candidate.

Campbell actually once served as the interim head coach of the Dolphins after they fired Joe Philbin in 2015. Campbell led the team to a 5-7 record after they started 1-3 under Philbin. Ryan Tannehill performed very well under Campbell and he just seemed to know how to motivate the Dolphins. They ultimately tapped Adam Gase as their next head coach, but Campbell landed on his feet in New Orleans.

With four extra years of a prominent coaching role under his belt, Campbell is now an appealing head coaching candidate. His biggest strength is that he knows how to get players to play hard, and that’s something that the Redskins have lacked under Gruden. If Campbell came in with the energy and was able to tweak the offense to make it work better under Haskins, the Redskins could quickly be set on that side of the ball. Then, it would just be about fixing the defense, which would fall more on Campbell’s coordinator.

Campbell may not be as big a name as some of the other coaches on this list, but he should get consideration for a job. He could be just the infusion of youth, offensive skills, and energy that the ‘Skins need to kick their team into a higher gear.
