Redskins Saturday Spotlight: Seven-round mock, building an elite defense
By Ian Cummings
For this shopping trip, one new weapon for Haskins isn’t enough. Terry McLaurin and Devin Duvernay is a very promising duo, but the Redskins need more dynamic ability in their skill position core.
Ideally, with the team’s tight end situation so uncertain, a tight end would have been the pick here. But the 2020 NFL Draft is uncharacteristically weak at tight end, and most of the options at this point offered low upside.
Thus, Plan B was enacted: Doubling down at wide receiver. For this pick, I chose Penn State’s K.J. Hamler, a true slot weapon who will be able to make the most out of the space in the middle of the field.
Hamler, at 5-foot-9, 176, is undersized for the NFL, but for what he lacks in size, he compensates in speed and elusiveness. He gears up with lightning-like speed, he’s hard to catch once he’s in full stride, and he’s hard to match and bring down as a ball carrier. Like McLaurin and Duvernay, Hamler is a knowledgeable route runner with the physical traits to maximize his play style, and he’ll help make Haskins’ job easier in Year 2.
