QB Case Keenum

Why the Redskins would trade Keenum: It’s been the year of the backup quarterback in the NFL, and some potential playoff contenders that could be without their starter long-term may have an interest in Keenum.

While Keenum hasn’t been consistent for the Redskins, he has been a decent starter when healthy. He also is coming off his best half of football of the season against the Vikings. Keenum has an expiring contract this season, so he has minimal value for the Redskins. If they can get a pick better than the compensatory pick they may net for losing Keenum, they could consider moving him to accelerate their race to the bottom of the NFL (and clear a path for Dwayne Haskins to develop on the field).

Who might be interested: The Chiefs stand out as a team that could be interested in Keenum. If Matt Moore performs poorly in relief of Patrick Mahomes on Sunday night, they may look to acquire some help at quarterback. Keenum would qualify and he could perform well under the tutelage of Andy Reid. And Keenum’s presence would afford the Chiefs the opportunity not to rush Mahomes back from his knee injury.

What Keenum could fetch on the open market: The Redskins swapped late-round picks to acquire the services of Keenum in the offseason. That seems to be about what he’d fetch on the trade market. But if a team like the Chiefs were desperate enough, perhaps they’d surrender an early-Day 3 pick for him.

Will the Redskins actually trade him? Probably not. There aren’t a lot of teams that will likely be interested in acquiring Keenum barring another contending quarterback getting hurt on Sunday. The Redskins will likely be happy to hang onto Keenum anyway, as he is the security blanket that allows them to keep Haskins sidelined until he’s ready. And, oh yeah, Keenum suffered a concussion on Thursday night, so that may make it very hard to move him.

The Redskins could feasibly look to move on from these veterans, but if anything, they may only make a single move at the deadline. It doesn’t seem that they’re committed to making changes, so ‘Skins fans won’t likely such much different from this disappointing team at the deadline.
