4. Redskins must make 49ers settle for field goals

San Francisco has played excellent football through the first five games of the season (they’re 5-0 for a reason). But one area where they have struggled is finishing drives, especially when in the redzone. Some of that is because of turnovers, while some of it because of kicking woes. They have left a lot of points on the table, and that is worrisome for the ‘Skins as the 49ers are still plus-83 in scoring differential despite that.

Washington, on the other hand, is not plus-83 in scoring differential and will likely have trouble scoring over 20 points. That’s why it’s going to be critical that this game stays a low scoring game, and they keep the 49ers out of the endzone. They are not going to be able to keep up in a shootout. Robbie Gould has only hit 9-of-15 field goals this season. So, the ‘Skins have to make them settle for field goals.

With league rules favoring offenses now more than ever, moving the ball between the twenties has become a lot easier. But, if the Redskins are going to hang with the 49ers, their defense must not break when San Francisco has a scoring opportunity. For a chance at a win, Washington is likely going to have to keep them under 20 points.
