2. Incorporate the fullback into the run offense quickly

For the first time since 2013, the Redskins are carrying a fullback on their roster. They signed Michael Burton earlier in the week to man the position.

Under Jay Gruden, the Redskins didn’t ever have a fullback. They would instead use guys like Niles Paul, Ryan Anderson, and J.P. Holtz at the position as needed. But it was rare to see the team line up in I-formation. That may change now.

With Callahan taking over as the head coach and wanting to establish a run-first identity, the team could look to run out of the I-formation quite a bit. Putting a lead blocker in front of Adrian Peterson could pay dividends. Peterson is coming off his best performance of the season, a 100-yard outing against the Dolphins, so they may look to ride him once again to get their offense moving.

The Redskins are unlikely to use the run game to win this contest. But if they can incorporate the fullback into the offense quickly, it will give the team a new look they can use. The team’s offense has been vanilla at times because of their injuries in the backfield and at tight end, but with a lead-blocker like Burton aboard, it will give them more options to work with two-back sets in the backfield. And that could at least open them up for some interesting plays.

The Redskins should look to see if they can make the fullback work as a part of the offense. Their goal should be to establish that they have one and can utilize him successfully. If that works, then they could consider rolling with one in the future. Maybe then they will target some versatile H-back type players — like the one they lost in Holtz — to provide more depth and versatility for whoever the new coach ends up being.
