Redskins: Week 7 goals for Washington in Bill Callahan’s second game as coach
4. Continue the development of Ereck Flowers
Staying on the offensive line, this is something that has taken center stage this season. Many bemoaned the signing of Ereck Flowers, as the former No. 9 overall pick had failed as a left tackle. So, why was the team bringing him in?
Well, the Redskins had always planned on moving Flowers to guard. That didn’t happen early in camp, as the team was significantly shorthanded at the tackle position. But once he moved inside, he started to progress. And throughout his first season at the position, he has been solid.
Flowers has seemingly gotten better each week. He has had some issues with penalties (five) but he hasn’t allowed a sack yet. Considering that he’s new to the guard position, that isn’t too bad. And it looks like the team may have found a gem in Flowers.
That said, this should be a good test for Flowers. He is likely to face some pass rush snaps from DeForest Buckner and that will be a good barometer for Flowers’ overall improvement. He may have some issues with Buckner, but if he can perform well, that will be a big step forward for him. And considering that this is only his seventh career game at guard, winning some battles against Buckner could really help him moving forward.
Flowers is only on a one-year deal, so if the Redskins want to get the most out of him, they need him to develop. They’ll also want to convince him that he should stay, and if he feels like he’s growing in Washington, that could play a role in his decision. Either way, his development will be in the spotlight over the next 10 games, as he has been one of the bright spots on offense this season.
