Cleveland Browns trade first-round pick, David Njoku for Trent Williams

I know what you’re thinking. David Njoku is on IR right now for the Browns. So, wouldn’t he be ineligible to be traded? The answer to that question has actually recently changed.

In 2018, the NFL officially changed the bylaws that govern Injured Reserve. And now, players on IR can be traded, according to this document provided by NFL Communications. So, Njoku is eligible to be traded this season.

The Redskins would love to get a guy like Njoku on the cheap. The team is desperate for some help at tight end, and Njoku is only 23 years old. He is in his third year in the league and is under club control for two years with a fourth-year on his contract in 2020 and a fifth-year option for 2021. The team could take on Njoku in hopes that he can establish himself as a weapon in Washington, something he has struggled to do at times in Cleveland.

Would the Browns be willing to trade Njoku and a first-round pick in exchange for Williams? Maybe, maybe not. It may be a bit too steep of a price for them. But if they get into a bidding war, they could be forced to make such a move. And while they may not seem like they’re in contention right now, they could still factor into the AFC North race, so John Dorsey will be aggressive with trades as he has been in the past.

The Browns really could use a player like Williams. Their tackle play has been terrible and that has put immense pressure on Baker Mayfield. With Williams in the fold, one side of the line would at least be in okay shape. So, perhaps that could do enough to bring the up-and-down Browns offense back to life, especially if they make a move during their Week 7 bye.

Losing Njoku hurts, but he won’t factor into the Browns’ plans until Week 11 at the earliest anyway. Also, it’s worth noting that Ricky Seals-Jones has been performing well in Njoku’s stead, so perhaps he could be given a chance to prove himself. So, maybe the team would be willing to give up Njoku and a first to get Williams.

For those wondering about the possibility of Odell Beckham Jr. being traded in exchange for Williams, that seems unlikely. While Beckham’s role in Cleveland hasn’t been big so far, he is still adjusting to a new team and likely just needs time to develop chemistry with Baker Mayfield. As the season goes along, he will probably improve and all of the trade buzz surrounding him will quickly die down. So, in short, don’t hold your breath for Beckham.

But if the rumors of the Browns’ interest are true, the Redskins can still get a solid haul for Williams.
