5. Hale Hentges leads Redskins TEs in catches

I know what some of you are thinking. Who is Hale Hentges?

The newest Redskins tight end was claimed off waivers earlier this week to provide depth at the position in the wake of a number of injuries. Jordan Reed and Vernon Davis were ruled out with concussions, Reed for the sixth-straight week and Davis for the second game in a row, while backup Jerome Cunningham was also dealing with a concussion.

With those injury concerns, Hentges will join Jeremy Sprinkle as the two healthiest tight ends on the roster. Sprinkle has shown an ability to make some catches this year, but he also had some issues catching the ball when wide open. So, perhaps Bill Callahan will be willing to get Hentges some more action.

Hentges, an Alabama product, caught seven passes for 80 yards during the preseason with the Indianapolis Colts. So, he has the ability to make catches. If he can prove that he can get open early, it’s possible that the Redskins could try to get him the ball over the middle of the field. The Dolphins are weak at linebacker and can be beaten at safety, so finding a tight end that can produce will be critical.

By the end of the game, I’m predicting that Hentges will be the team’s top pass-catcher at tight end. He may not catch a lot of balls, but he could start to prove that he’s a worthy candidate for a No. 2 tight end spot moving forward.
