Goal No. 5 – Lose to Beat the Dolphins

If we’re being completely honest with ourselves, the Redskins don’t gain anything from beating the Dolphins. They almost gain more from losing: a lead in the race to the No. 1 pick, and another big crack in the glass between Bruce Allen and a severance package.

But even when teams like the Dolphins are trying to tank, from a front office perspective, their players are still out on the field, giving maximum effort. The Redskins, who aren’t even trying to lose and find themselves as 0-5, will surely be motivated to beat somebody, even if that somebody ends up being lowly Miami.

If we’re looking at the big picture, it might be better for Washington to lose. Bruce Allen, in his press conference, had tunnel vision, staring only at the 0-5 record and the chance to change that against the Dolphins. A win would support his delusion that the team is close. A loss would be perhaps the most crushing embarrassment yet, and it could be another breaking point.

But for the team itself, losing against Miami isn’t in the game plan. Bill Callahan aims to start his Redskins tenure 1-0. Time will tell if he can accomplish such a feat.
