Callahan has confidence in Kevin O’Connell

One of the major positives to come out of Callahan’s press conference is the fact that he seems to believe in offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell. Callahan seemed ready to trust him and hand over the offense to him.

“He’s a bright young coach with a bright future ahead of him,” Callahan said of O’Connell.

According to Callahan, O’Connell is going to get a chance to call the plays and operate the offense. Callahan did imply that O’Connell had been heavily involved in the offense before and described him as Gruden’s “conduit”, but now, we’ll really get a chance to see what O’Connell can do while creating his own game plan.

This is a big opportunity for O’Connell to prove himself. There’s a chance that he could emerge as the next head coaching option for the Redskins if he can get the offense back on track or if he creates a rapport with Haskins. The latter point may be a bit more difficult to achieve if Haskins isn’t playing, but he’ll have a chance to work closely with him for the rest of the season.

Callahan could have attempted to roadblock O’Connell had he thought that he had a chance to hold onto the head coaching job. Instead, it seems that he’s ready to let the younger coach take over and see what he’s made of moving forward. That’s a good sign for Washington and is probably the best news to come out of this press conference.
