5. TE Jeremy Sprinkle

The Redskins are officially beyond thin at the tight end position. While their three-man unit of Jordan Reed, Vernon Davis, and Jeremy Sprinkle looked solid heading into the season, injuries have unsurprisingly proven to be a problem for them.

Reed suffered a concussion in the third game of the preseason. While there was some hope that he would play in Week 1, it is now Week 5 and he hasn’t progressed. Rumors swirled that his career might be over due to the concussion, so it’s worth wondering if we’ll ever see him play again.

Davis has been holding the fort as the starting tight end in Reed’s absence, but he came in on Tuesday and was placed in concussion protocol. In all likelihood, he won’t be able to play on Sunday against New England.

That will leave Sprinkle and the recently-signed journeyman Jerome Robinson as the only options at tight end. And Sprinkle should see a bulk of the snaps for the team.

Sprinkle has proven to be a quality blocker during his time in the NFL, but he has been inconsistent as a receiver. He has had some drops this season and has struggled to be a big-time vertical playmaker, but he has also made some improbable catches as well. In short, he has been inconsistent. But perhaps in a bigger role, his receiving ability will shine through.

The Patriots have an excellent linebacker corps that has limited opposing tight ends for most of the year. If Sprinkle can find space and make some plays, that could be a positive for his development. And if he can continue to grow, then he may be able to solidify himself as the team’s No. 2 tight end moving forward. At the very least, a strong showing against the Patriots should help him achieve that.
