Could Gruden save his job by firing himself as play-caller?

The Reality Is, Jay Gruden could facilitate this acceleration of Haskins’ development. And in doing so, he could potentially save his job. If he were to voluntarily hand the play-calling duties over to O’Connell and name Haskins the starter for the remainder of the season, he very well might not win more than a couple games this year. But this kind of Hail Mary might be just the type of move that could might make it very difficult for the team to fire him at the end of the season, knowing that the organization wouldn’t want to disrupt their prize young quarterback’s development.

There’s no guarantee that even this would save Gruden’s job. It’s not clear that he has the autonomy to even make this decision at this point. But if he does, he should make these moves and do everything he can to make them successful during the remainder of the season. And then, maybe, the Redskins would give him a chance to continue in his role for the make-or-break final season of his contract.
