Redskins Week 4 Reality Checks – Is it 2020 Yet?

4. Reality Is: Chris Thompson is due for a breakout.

It’s 2019. For all of his shortcomings, it’s clear that Jay Gruden is right not to be excited about the idea of running his offense through Adrian Peterson.

Peterson missed a few key holes in his last game against the Bears, the worst of which Mark Bullock of The Athletic pointed out here:

But even more importantly, the NFL is changing, and a running game predicated on perfect blocks and cuts as opposed to creative formations and mismatches is simply leaving too many yards on the table.

Now that the team is 0-3, I think Gruden will go ahead and abandon the pretense of giving Peterson “starter reps”, and use Chris Thompson much more heavily, along with Steven Sims. Couple that with how bad the Giants are at linebacker, and I think Thompson could go off in this game.

Prediction: Thompson gets 18 touches and ends up with 125 yards and a TD.
