5. Adrian Peterson is held to under 3.0 yards per carry again

The Giants don’t have a strong defense. But their defensive line is pretty good. With first-round pick Dexter Lawrence and former Alabama second-round pick Dalvin Tomlinson playing up front, they have a couple of big-bodied run stuffers who could create problems for Adrian Peterson in the running game.

It’s not like the Redskins running game has been strong to start the season anyway. The team has been playing from behind quite a bit in their first three games, but both Derrius Guice and Peterson have had trouble finding space against opposing defenses. Part of the problem is that the offensive line hasn’t blocked as well as many had hoped, but the other part of the issue is that Guice wasn’t healthy and Peterson just looks a step slower than he did last year.

Against the Giants, it doesn’t seem that the factors holding back the run game are likely to change. Guice is on IR. Peterson still hasn’t proven himself this season. And the offensive line may be in the worst shape of all.

Center Chase Roullier and right guard Brandon Scherff are both banged-up heading into Sunday’s game. It’s unclear if they’ll be able to play. If they can’t, Tony Bergstrom and rookie Wes Martin will join the fold, and that could continue to downgrade the blocking. And even if the two do play, they might be less effective as blockers and could struggle to contain some of the Giants’ defensive line.

Because of this, it seems likely that Peterson will not be able to find running room once again. He could post less than 3.0 yards per carry and that could continue to render the Redskins’ offense one dimensional.
