Redskins vs. Giants: Previewing Jay Gruden’s last stand, matchups to watch, more
Score prediction
This isn’t an easy game to predict. Jay Gruden is fighting to save his job, so hypothetically, he should be able to motivate his team to play well. But as ‘Skins fans have seen often in the Gruden era, the Redskins fail to show up in big, important games. And it remains to be seen if they will be able to show up this week.
Furthermore, amid all the rumblings of Gruden and Manusky’s job security, it’s possible that the players could be numb to the fate of their coaches. Gruden has been there for six years and hasn’t accomplished much, so some players may already understand that he is likely gone no matter what. That’s the problem with having a lame-duck head coach.
As for the Giants, they are playing with renewed belief with their future franchise quarterback on the field in Jones. They are coming off a big, come-from-behind win, so they need to avoid being flat. But if they can do that, they should be able to beat the Redskins at home.
If the Redskins lose, the Gruden era may come to an end. Right now, I think that remains a possibility and while Washington may be able to keep this close thanks to the Giants’ shoddy defense, I don’t think that they’ll be able to pull out the win as their defense could be an issue.
I’m predicting a close loss for the Redskins that will result in some change, whether that’s getting rid of Gruden or scapegoating Manusky first. We’ll see what actually happens come Sunday.
