Fringe Playoff Teams

These teams could easily make the playoffs and go on a run, but there are some questions surrounding them that have them teetering on the brink of the postseason.

15. Buffalo Bills (2-0) – Previously 22. The Bills have one of the most well-balanced teams in the league. Their defense is strong, they rebuilt their offensive line and receiving corps, and they have plenty of options in the backfield. Josh Allen is the big question mark at QB. He has looked good at times, but he’ll need to be consistently accurate if the Bills are going to make it to the playoffs this season.

16. San Francisco 49ers (2-0) – Previously 24. Much was made of the demise of Jimmy Garoppolo after one preseason outing, but he had a great game against the Bengals. He still has to prove himself against better teams, but he is giving the team a chance to win. The defense is also starting together, so the team is looking like a potential Wild Card contender. But again, they need to prove themselves against better teams before they can be trusted.

17. Cleveland Browns (1-1) – Previously 16. The Browns dismantled the Jets on Monday Night Football, but their offense still wasn’t quite right. Most of their passing offense came off a big play to Odell Beckham Jr. and they did get crushed by the Titans. They could make a playoff run, but Baker Mayfield going to have to step up before they can be trusted.

18. Los Angeles Chargers (1-1) – Previously 14. The Chargers looked like contenders last season, but injuries have had a big impact on them so far this year. They won in overtime over the Colts but lost to the Lions. Their offensive line has been a mess without Russell Okung and until they get him back, Philip Rivers will be under a lot of pressure. That could make it tough for them to win game against teams with a potent pass rush.

19. Indianapolis Colts (1-1) – Previously 17. So far, Jacoby Brissett has kept the Colts competitive in his two starts. The team looks complete and while they lack dynamic players outside of Darius Leonard and T.Y. Hilton, they are a solid, all-around team that could win the AFC South. Still, they’re only a mid-tier team on a league-wide basis.
