San Francisco 49ers

The 49ers were a sleeper darling for most of the 2018 offseason before losing quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to a torn ACL. This offseason, the buzz wasn’t nearly as loud, but they have notched two road wins to start the season and could be competitive if Garoppolo continues to improve.

However, the team lost offensive tackle Joe Staley to a broken fibula in their Week 2 win over the Cincinnati Bengals. Staley, a venerable veteran, is expected to miss eight weeks with the injury and will likely go on short-term IR for the team.

In Staley’s absence, the team lacks depth at tackle. Former top-10 pick Mike McGlinchey is still playing at right tackle, but sixth-round rookie Justin Skule is the only other true tackle on the team’s roster. That opens up a big need, and the team will want to protect Garoppolo to ensure that his knee doesn’t suddenly become a problem again.

Williams would be a sensible target for the 49ers. He is familiar with head coach Kyle Shanahan from their time together in Washington. Williams would replace Staley as a sturdy veteran on the left side of the offensive line. And if Staley returns, the 49ers could kick one of them inside to guard to further strengthen the offensive line. One of the veterans would have to be willing to sacrifice to do that, but the Niners could potentially make it work.

The 49ers may not be willing to offer a first-round pick in exchange for Williams, but perhaps a couple of Day 2 picks would get the job done. That’s something that the Redskins could certainly use, as they are lacking a second-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft from their move up to get Montez Sweat.

A Williams to San Francisco deal certainly does make some sense and while there may be some obstacles to overcome, the team could still explore it.
