Redskins coaches’ report cards through two weeks of preseason
By Ian Cummings
Redskins special teams coordinator Nate Kaczor
Nate Kaczor was statistically a noticeable step down from former Redskins special teams coordinator Ben Kotwica when Washington hired Kaczor. Per Football Outsiders, Kaczor’s special teams unit in Tampa Bay was ranked No. 29 in the NFL last year. while Ben Kotwica’s was ranked No. 8.
Kaczor was also ranked No. 29 the year before as well, and in fact, throughout his tenure with the Buccaneers, his special teams unit never ranked above No. 20. The Redskins didn’t have the opportunity to pick from the cream of the crop, but early on, there are already problems with Kaczor’s unit.
Through two preseason games, the Redskins’ special teams unit has allowed two punt return touchdowns. Big plays on special teams can tip the scales in any game, and it’s usually one of the differences between the contenders and the afterthoughts. Kaczor’s department, in just two games, has been a recurring issue. He’ll have to shore that up in the next two games, or else his stint in D.C. might not last for long.
