Stud: Daron Payne

Heading into his second NFL season, Payne is starting to look like a real monster on the Redskins defensive line. He had a nice rookie season, but he could be poised for an even bigger sophomore campaign.

Payne was disruptive at the point of attack when he was in the game. He showed quickness and the ability to fire off the snap with a good first step and get in the way of ballcarriers. His final stats, two tackles, don’t do justice to just how well he played.

Payne also had a major impact on one of the key Redskins plays of the game. He got his hands up on an Andy Dalton pass in the first quarter and deflected it into the air. That tip was then grabbed by safety Montae Nicholson, who motored through open space and returned it for a 96-yard touchdown run. And that was all thanks to Payne’s deflection.

Not only was Payne able to make that play, he immediately got up the field to help Nicholson make the return. He was ready to block for his teammate, so the combination of having that motor and those instincts is certainly massive for Payne.

If Payne can keep making an impact on the passing game, whether it’s as a pass rusher or by making deflections and getting his hands into passing lanes, his ascension will continue. He was a standout in all categories tonight, so that’s certainly encouraging as he continues to develop.
