Redskins Training Camp Profile 2019: EDGE Montez Sweat
2019 outlook for Sweat
Of all the pass rushers selected in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft, Sweat’s outlook may be the best. He could have been a top-10 pick had that misdiagnosed heart condition been cleared up sooner. But aside from his talent, his situation is even better.
Sweat is going to get a chance to serve as the team’s No. 2 edge rusher across from the ever-faithful Kerrigan. That will already take some attention away from him. But even better, the Redskins have one of the best interior defensive lines in the NFL.
Daron Payne, Jonathan Allen, and Matt Ioannidis will all do a lot to draw defenders away from Sweat. Even reserves Tim Settle and Caleb Brantley will require attention, and the front line of the Redskins’ defense could give opposing coaches nightmares.
Sweat has the upside of a double-digit sack artist. He may not be able to get to the mark of 10, depending on how the sacks are distributed among the stellar defensive front, but make no mistake. He will have a big impact.
If Sweat can add a new element of length, athleticism, speed, and consistency to the Redskins defense, he will prove to be one of the team’s biggest acquisitions of the offseason. It will be interesting to see if he can live up to his enormous upside in his first season in the Burgundy and Gold.
