Five Redskins players you can’t forget heading into 2019
By Ian Cummings
No. 5 – Redskins RB Derrius Guice
Not many have forgotten about Derrius Guice, the figure. His attitude has been infectious all offseason, and he figures to be a big part of the team’s plans moving forward. But just in case people forgot about the player Derrius Guice, and how good he could be, it needs to be touched on once more.
Guice was a first-round talent in the 2018 NFL Draft. He brought with him an enticing combination of burst, speed, contact balance, and relentless aggression, and his well-rounded skill set pegged him as a potential Redskins target at pick No. 13, in the eyes of some.
It turns out, running backs aren’t often worth that high of a pick, based on positional value alone (Something I learned afterward), and Guice himself fell down the draft board due to phantom character concerns that arose in late April of 2018. Thus, he was available for the Redskins in late Round 2.
Now, after missing his first year due to an ACL tear, Guice appears to be well on his way to a full recovery. Coming back from an ACL injury, there will always be lingering questions. But if Guice lives up to his pre-draft reputation, he has the potential to be an effective and versatile offensive weapon for the Redskins, and an asset in Dwayne Haskins’ early career.
