New York Giants general manager Dave Gettleman has claimed that multiple teams would have taken Daniel Jones before the 17th pick. Redskins president Bruce Allen responded to those comments recently.

The Giants made one of the more surprising picks of the 2019 NFL Draft at the No. 6 spot. With a handful of top-notch defensive players still on the board, general manager Dave Gettleman elected to take Duke quarterback Daniel Jones as the potential successor to Eli Manning.

Jones was viewed as a reach by some who have been adamant that Jones would be on the board with the Giants’ second pick in the first round at No. 17 overall. However, Gettleman seemingly thinks that a team like the Denver Broncos or the Washington Redskins would have considered grabbing him with their respective first-round picks. There were some rumors connecting Jones to the Redskins, but ultimately, they ended up with Dwayne Haskins.

Recently, Bruce Allen spoke about the rumors that Gettleman had started, and he took at a dig at the rival GM with his comments.

"“We picked the player we wanted to pick,” Allen said on NFL Total Access on Tuesday night. “I’m almost positive Dave has no clue what our draft board would be. I don’t know which draft boards he knows, but he doesn’t know ours.”"

Allen is almost certainly right, and it’s probable that Gettleman was just connecting the dots regarding the team’s potential interest in Jones. But at this point, Allen isn’t going to comment on whether or not the team would have drafted Jones if available. They have Haskins, and that is that.

Of course, if Haskins had come off the board, it’s well within the realm of possibility that Jones could have been the selection at 15 if he was still available. So, Gettleman was probably right to at least have some apprehension about Jones coming off the board since he was more respected by NFL higher-ups than by the media. That said, if he was truly worried about a team selecting Jones, he should have just traded up from the 17th spot to guarantee they could get him while also scooping an elite defensive talent like Josh Allen.

Only time will tell if Jones or Haskins is the better NFL quarterback. But one thing is certain. The Redskins fans seem to have some level of excitement about Haskins, so hopefully, he will have a chance to succeed as a rookie and become a long-term building block at the quarterback position.
