Round 1, Pick 15

Will Pick: QB Daniel Jones, Duke

As the draft draws nearer, this seems to be the likely pick if the Redskins take a first-round quarterback. There are still rumblings that the team could like Dwayne Haskins, but they may have to move up to get him. A Josh Rosen trade remains possible but if they can’t agree on a deal before draft day, it may be hard for the team to pass on an early quarterback.

Jones has been maligned by many, but I actually like his skill set a fair bit. He has a good frame, great athleticism, a solid arm, very good accuracy, and is a very smart and well-coached passer. He needs to work on his deep-ball accuracy and he will need to avoid trying to do too much with his legs at the next level, but he has the tools that NFL teams look for in a starting quarterback.

More from Riggo's Rag

The NFL seems higher on Jones than most fans, so he should come off the board sooner than most think. With a supporting cast that is bound to be an improvement over what he had at Duke, Jones should have a chance to play well and may have a Carson Wentz-type career trajectory.

Should Pick: EDGE Montez Sweat, Mississippi State

I didn’t think there was a chance that Sweat would be available with this pick. But now, it’s looking possible that he could slip a bit due to some medical concerns. If that happens, the Redskins should pounce on him right away.

Sweat is long, athletic, and well-rounded. He had great production at Mississippi State (22.5 sacks in the past two seasons) and was one of the eye-openers at the combine. He needs to improve his ability to play in space, but he is great off the edge and against the run. With good coaching, he could fix the issues in space and become one of the top edge players in the league.

The Redskins could also consider some other edge rushers with this pick including Brian Burns and Clelin Ferrell. All would be solid options to help upgrade the edge.

Dark Horse: TE T.J. Hockenson, Iowa

Tight end is a need for the ‘Skins, but it’s not a glaring one. Still, if Hockenson is on the board at 15, the team could opt to select him to give them a quality blocker and receiving weapon. Hockenson could be one of the best tight ends in the league, so he should go in the first round. Perhaps the Redskins will like him enough to pull the trigger on him — if he’s available.
