Redskins: 5 practices that have allowed them to stay bad in recent years

Refuse to Rebuild
And while we’re talking about the design of the NFL draft system, be sure to make every move possible to avoid picking in the top 10. Play all your best players every game, even after you’ve been eliminated from the playoffs. 7-9 is much better than 6-10 and INFINITELY better than 5-11! Don’t be a sucker!
There’s really no better chance of hitting on a transcendent player at pick 10 than at pick 20 anyway. Think of all the great players that have been taken late in the draft! In fact, this coming draft, it’s likely your position of need will have more value at the bottom half of the first round anyway.

Trade up in the draft
As JP Finlay has regularly pointed out, the last time the Redskins missed the playoffs three straight years, they traded 3 first-round picks to move up and select RGIII. The excitement and buzz around the team hasn’t been that great since they signed senior citizens Deion Sanders and Bruce Allen in one offseason. And while the team had a fluky good second half of the year in 2012 that, if not for the unlucky break of RGIII’s injury, might have ended in a deep playoff run, you can’t let that distract you from the fact that the trade set up the franchise to fail for years to come.
In the six years since then, they have been digging out of the talent deficit that trade left them with. You don’t want to dwell on the fact that both Kirk Cousins and Russell Wilson have had infinitely more successful careers in the NFL and were available in the third and fourth rounds of that same draft, respectively, no trade up required. Trade up. The sizzle is worth the burn.
So there they are. Five steps to being an NFL loser. The Reality is, my team is great at this whole loser thing…I guess they’re not bad at everything. But if they want to win moving forward, they’re going to have to avoid doing these things repeatedly.
