31. . Quarterback. Ohio State. Dwayne Haskins. 6. player

Jacob: This pick is tough to figure out. On one hand, the Giants have been pretty adamant that they aren’t looking for quarterbacks. They have expressed a lot of confidence in Eli Manning despite the common narrative that Manning is done. Reports have indicated that they could consider adding an edge rusher here and there are plenty of talented players available.

However, I’m not willing to buy that just yet. The reported lack of interest in quarterbacks could be a smokescreen. It’s possible that it might not be, but my money is on them drafting a quarterback at some point early in the draft.

Dwayne Haskins is one of the more solid quarterbacks in this draft class. People point to his superb stats at Ohio State — he completed 70 percent of his passes for 4,831 yards and 50 touchdowns — and his success with the Buckeyes is noted. For the next level, Haskins has a really nice arm and good short to intermediate accuracy. That should give him a chance to succeed at the next level.

However, Haskins does have some issues as well. His ball placement isn’t always great, he lacks mobility, and sometimes has trouble against pressure. These issues could give him some growing pains at the next level, especially considering that Haskins was only a one-year starter at Ohio State.

Still, Haskins would have far more upside than Manning. And in terms of his overall throwing ability, Haskins is reminiscent of Jameis Winston. He has a great arm and decent accuracy and should have a chance to succeed as a starting quarterback in the NFL. But if the ball placement issues aren’t fixed, turnovers could be a bit of an issue for Haskins.

If the Giants do take a defensive lineman or edge rusher, they have plenty of options. Montez Sweat, Ed Oliver, Rashan Gary, Brian Burns, and Clelin Ferrell could all garner consideration with this pick. And if they do take a defensive player here, they could shift their attention to a passer with the 17th pick (Daniel Jones of Duke would make sense, if he’s still on the board).
