Redskins: 3 moves that would be better off as April Fools Day jokes
2. Drafting less than two pass catchers in the 2019 NFL Draft
The Redskins need to upgrade their receiving corps. They also could stand to add a long-term upgrade at tight end with Vernon Davis in the twilight of his career and Jordan Reed struggling to stay healthy. They will need to do that in the 2019 NFL Draft.
The draft this year is light on true No. 1 receivers and doesn’t have a lot of first-round talent at the receiver position. That said, there are plenty of quality No. 2 receivers and slot guys that will be found on Day 2 and early on Day 3 of the draft. The Redskins will need to invest a couple of picks in that range to help out their receiving corps.
By adding a couple of receiving weapons, the team could give themselves a complement to Paul Richardson and a potential replacement for Josh Doctson. Doctson is entering a critical year, and if he doesn’t show improvement, the team may let him go. Thus, having a capable replacement already on the roster would be a smart move. Guys to consider on Day 2 would include Deebo Samuel, N’Keal Harry, and Miles Boykin.

Additionally, the team could look to add some slot competition to compete with Trey Quinn for the starting role there. Quinn is reportedly the favorite to take on the role vacated by the departed Jamison Crowder, but he was hurt a lot as a rookie. Adding a guy like Hunter Renfrow in Round 5 should certainly be considered.
While tight end may not be as pressing of a need for the squad, it’s a very good tight end draft. There should be quality receiving weapons available in the middle rounds, and if T.J. Hockenson is on the board with the 15th pick, the ‘Skins will have to consider adding him as a top target in the offense.
The point here is that even in a top-light draft for pass-catching weapons, there will be an option to add quite a lot of depth and potential at the position. And given the sorry state of the team’s receiving corps, they can’t pass on that opportunity. Getting multiple receivers and maybe even a tight end should certainly be something that the Redskins try hard to do with a few of their nine draft picks. Obviously, they shouldn’t force it if the value isn’t there, but receiver should still be a priority.
