NFL Mock Draft 4.0: Quarterbacks rise post-combine, Redskins land pass catcher
There are a few different directions the Colts could go with this pick. They could use a No. 2 receiver to pair with T.Y. Hilton, some help on the defensive line, another cornerback, or a safety to pair with Malik Hooker long-term. Johnathan Abram is one of the better prospects left on the board, so he would make sense here.
Abram hasn’t been talked about as much as some of the other safeties in this class, but he may well be the first one off the board. Abram had a nice outing at the combine that was highlighted by his faster than expected 4.45 time in the 40-yard dash. He has good size, athleticism, and should be a good box safety in the NFL.
Abram had 99 tackles, three sacks, and two interceptions last season for Mississippi State. All were career highs. On tape, he brings energy to the game and certainly would qualify as a hard hitter. Pairing Abram with Hooker — more of a rangy playmaker — would solidify the Colts’ safety tandem for years to come.
Some other prospects that could go with this pick include DL Dexter Lawrence, WR N’Keal Harry, S Taylor Rapp, CB Deandre Baker, or DB Chauncey Gardner-Johnson.
