Safety. Ravens. Eric Weddle. 5. player. 26.

The Ravens stunned many when they elected to part ways with Eric Weddle ahead of free agency. Though Weddle is 34, he is still a high-level starter and has been a great player for the Ravens over the course of the past three years. The team netted $7.5 million in cap savings by cutting Weddle, but as a potential contender in the AFC, it was surprising to see the Ravens part with him.

With Weddle now available, the Redskins should certainly consider targeting him. They have a massive hole at safety and need to find at least one starter, and possibly two if Clinton-Dix departs in free agency. While Weddle wouldn’t be a long-term fix, he could at least hold down one of the starting spots for the next couple of seasons.

Weddle has been a ballhawk during his career and though he had no picks last year, he grabbed 10 combined in his previous two seasons in Baltimore. He’s a disciplined playmaker, is sound in coverage, and is a leader. The lattermost part of that equation could end up being what the Redskins are most interested in, as adding a leader in the back-end could really help to fortify their defense.

Additionally, Weddle wouldn’t count toward the compensatory pick formula, as he was cut by his team. So, any deal that the ‘Skins would sign Weddle to wouldn’t hurt their chances of getting high-level comp picks. That is something they have invested in during recent seasons, so that could play a role here.

Weddle isn’t a great long-term option, which is why he checks in at fifth on this list. Still, he would make a lot of sense for Washington and would stabilize a position that has been a weakness for the better part of the last decade.
