Jace Sternberger is an interesting case study for this draft. He declared for the draft after just one season at Texas A&M. He had spent the previous two seasons at Kansas, but that didn’t work out.

Normally, entering the draft after just one productive season is a risk. However, Sternberger was terrific at Texas A&M. He caught 48 passes for 832 yards and 10 touchdowns. He demonstrated that he has the receiving ability needed to be effective in the NFL. Additionally, his frame (6-4) and route running ability are polished enough to make him a potentially solid red-zone weapon.

However, the concern about Sternberger being a one-year producer could very much be real. He did play in a Big 12 offense, and those units can tend to inflate offensive numbers. That’s not to say that Sternberger isn’t skilled — he is, and moves well for a man his size — but still, teams will want to make sure that he will be able to succeed at the NFL level.

Sternberger can help himself out a lot by succeeding in the drills at the Combine. If he can demonstrate the same skill he showcased on tape at Texas A&M, it will make him a lot more trustworthy. He could end up being a Day 2 pick and with a strong combine, he should really solidify that notion.

The Redskins would likely consider Sternberger with either of their third-round picks. He would be an ideal get as a backup TE with starter potential down the road.
