There’s no question that D.K. Metcalf is going to draw the most attention of the receivers at the NFL Combine. The receiver class is deep, but it lacks true top-end talent. However, at the Combine, Metcalf will have a chance to prove that he can be just that.

Metcalf is a big-bodied wide receiver and has a massive frame. If you haven’t already seen this picture of Metcalf standing next to his 6-1 teammate and fellow early-round prospect A.J. Brown, check it out. He looks more like a bodybuilder than a college-level wide receiver.

At the Combine, Metcalf will have a chance to show off his strength in the bench press, but he could also do a lot to showcase his speed in drills. Many will be focused on his straight-line speed, so his 40 time will garner particular interest. If he can log a time in the low-4.4 second range, he would solidify his status as a potential dynamic playmaker at the NFL level.

Of course, Metcalf’s performance in the drills could do a lot as well. But really, the opportunity is there for him to prove that he can be an upper-level athlete at the receiver position. This is especially true with Marquise Brown out, as the Oklahoma burner may have been the only player that could truly challenge Metcalf’s athletic prowess.

Conversely, the Combine could drum up some concerns with Metcalf depending on how his medical exams go. Metcalf’s season ended early due to a neck issue, so teams will be looking into that.

Because of the storylines surrounding Metcalf, any team needing a receiver — including the Redskins — will need to keep a very close eye on him to see if he ends up with a stock up following the Combine. If he performs well, the ‘Skins could have a lot of interest in him with the 15th pick (if they don’t already).
