Cornerback: Jason Verrett, Los Angeles Chargers

I really like Jason Verrett as a player. When he’s healthy, he’s a very strong starting cornerback. However, health has been a major issue for Verrett and because of that, it’s hard to recommend signing him.

In the past three years, Verrett has only suited up for five games. You read that right. Five games. He has missed a whopping 43 contests while dealing with a myriad of injuries. He suffered an ACL tear in 2016 and an Achilles tear last offseason. Meanwhile, he missed all but one game in 2017 after dealing with knee soreness and being placed on IR.

Verrett still has upside. He turns 28 in June and if he can stay healthy, he could regain his Pro Bowl form from 2015. However, he’s so far removed from a solid season and the health concerns are simply too great to warrant bringing him on.

Washington would probably like to add some veteran help at corner, especially since Josh Norman will probably only be with the team one more year at the most. The team has some good young talent at the position with Fabian Moreau, Greg Stroman, and Danny Johnson all flashing upside at times last year. Veteran depth would be nice to provide a mentor. However, Verrett wouldn’t fit in well, as he is just an injury waiting to happen.

Also, it’s notable that Verrett is just 5-10. Both Stroman and Johnson are similarly undersized, so adding another smaller corner to the roster makes little sense.

Verrett should sign somewhere he can be given a chance to re-emerge as a starting option if he can stay healthy. A team will take a one-year flyer on him, but he simply doesn’t fit what the Redskins need at this point in time.
