Washington Redskins special teams grades for the 2018 campaign
Tress Way
A good case can be made for Tress Way as the Redskins MVP. That may be seen as an indictment of the season — after all, Way is a punter — but Way’s name should be celebrated for the phenomenal season he put forth.
Last season, Way was the best punter in the NFL. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. On 79 kicks, Way averaged 45.3 yards. That was good for 13th in the NFL, but the more impressive number was his punts inside the 20.
Way landed 41 punts inside the 20-yard-line. That alone would be great, as that led the league. However, Way did that without recording a single touchback. That is borderline impossible to do, yet Way was able to achieve that. No other team had fewer than two touchbacks on punts. Somehow despite this, he didn’t earn Pro Bowl or All-Pro nods.
For the Redskins, Way constantly flipped the field and gave their defense a fighting chance. Even when their offense sputtered, Way did everything he could to help the team win the field position battle. He’s clearly one of the best punters in the league and will continue to succeed moving forward, especially since he can fake the occasional punt, as he showed with is one completion last season.
