NFL Mock Draft 2.0: Redskins end up with a first-round quarterback, go defense in Round 2
The Seahawks could use an upgrade on their defensive line. Frank Clark was prolific this year, but he is set to hit free agency. Even if the Seahawks slap him with the franchise tag, they could still consider some potential upgrades on the edge, as only Clark (13) and Jarran Reed (10.5 from the DT position) had more than three sacks on the year.
Luckily for the Seahawks, Jachai Polite is on the board here. Polite is a great speed rusher from Florida who just had his best collegiate season. He had 11 sacks and demonstrated that he might have what it takes to be a quality edge rusher at the next level.
On tape, Polite clearly has the speed needed to make an impact at the NFL level. He’s quick off the line and that should translate to the NFL. His stock could rise a bit depending on how well he shows at the Combine and right now, he seems like a top-25 pick at the very least.
The Seahawks have long targeted athletic players to take on roles in their defense. They drafted Bruce Irvin in the first round because of his athletic ability, despite the fact that few expected him to be considered as a first-round option. Polite could be a similar type of pick, and he could play the hybrid linebacker/edge role that Irvin used to occupy.
Adding Polite would give the Seahawks another versatile piece for their defense and would begin to re-establish talent on that unit after the dismantling of the Legion of Boom. They could also consider adding an offensive lineman or a tight end here, but the latter position is deep and Polite is a better prospect than the offensive linemen that are on the board.
