Clemson. Clelin Ferrell. 16. player. 87. . Edge Rusher

The Panthers could use some help on the edge. Julius Peppers announced his retirement after a storied 17-year career, and the Panthers don’t really have another player that looks like a quality starter across from Mario Addison.

Luckily for Carolina, they’re picking at a juncture where a quality edge player should be available. In this case, Clelin Ferrell is still on the board, and the Panthers would be very happy to land him with this pick.

Ferrell has been a consistent pass-rushing threat for Clemson over the course of the past few seasons. In three years as a primary player on the edge, Ferrell has totaled 50.5 tackles for loss and 27 sacks. He has decent athletic ability but his try-hard attitude and motor are really what will make him an effective player at the next level.

The minor concern with Ferrell’s tape is that he didn’t appear to be as explosive as he was during his junior year this past season at Clemson. Still, he has enough athleticism and quickness to get by, but he may not be the dynamic threat that many expected him to be. For that reason, he may fall out of the top 10 in this draft.

Ferrell would be a great replacement for Peppers. It’s hard to imagine him falling much further than this pick, as some team will fall in love with his effort and body of work.
