NFL Mock Draft 2.0: Redskins end up with a first-round quarterback, go defense in Round 2
Last season, the Packers had only one player record double-digit sacks. It wasn’t Clay Matthews. It wasn’t Mike Daniels. It was Kyler Fackrell. While Fackrell had a breakout year, the team has little talent across from him on the edge. They will need to change that in this draft and will likely target one of the many quality edge rushers that are available in this draft.
With the 12th pick, the Packers will be hard-pressed to find an option better than Montez Sweat. The Mississippi State star was one of the standouts at the Senior Bowl, and he did a lot to improve his draft stock during the week in practice. He measured in at 6-foot-6 with an athletic frame and very long arms, so that helped his stock as well.
Sweat has been a force for the Bulldogs over the course of the past two seasons. After transferring from Michigan State, Sweat logged 30 tackles for loss and a whopping 22.5 sacks in the past two years combined. He did this against quality SEC offenses and at times, he was unblockable. Thanks to his frame and athletic ability, he will have a chance to become a double-digit sack threat quickly in the NFL.
For the Packers, Sweat would be a logical replacement for the over-the-hill Matthews. He would give the team a true No. 1 pass rusher and that would allow Fackrell to continue to get the opportunities he had this year. Plus, because of Sweat’s length and instincts, he will have a chance to deflect balls at the line of scrimmage, so that could end up being just as impactful as his abilities as a pass rusher.
If the Packers don’t like Sweat, Clelin Ferrell could also get some consideration here. But considering all the positives surrounding Sweat, he should be the pick and his stock could improve even more with a strong showing at the Combine.
