NFL Mock Draft 2.0: Redskins end up with a first-round quarterback, go defense in Round 2
The Bengals definitely need to add a linebacker to improve their team’s defense. When Nick Vigil and Vontaze Burfict were out last season, the defense couldn’t cover anything. And with Burfict’s career potentially over due to concussions, the team needs to find a potential replacement.
Devin White would qualify. While the team could explore potentially adding a lineman on either side of the ball with the pick, White is one of the better players available and could do more to impact the team’s defense than any other pick at this juncture.
I had the Bengals selecting White in my initial 2019 mock draft from early January. Here’s what I said about him at that time.
"White has really good instincts and is a very smart player. He tends to react quickly to the ball and makes plays as a result of that. He was the catalyst of a very good LSU unit and is far and away the best linebacker in this draft class. Considering that do-it-all linebackers are becoming more important in the NFL, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see White go higher than this, as teams will be very high on his potential. There are not really many holes in White’s game. He seems like a safe pick, and the Bengals’ new coach (whoever that may be) will be glad to scoop him up and utilize him to help fix the team’s woeful run defense from last season."
White has a lot of upside and while he could work on his play recognition a bit, he has everything that coaches look for in a stud linebacker. He could work his way into the top 10, so the Bengals are getting a good value here.
