Washington Redskins 2018 season cornerback grades
By Ian Cummings
Greg Stroman
Who was the Redskins top-graded cornerback on Pro Football Focus? Was it Josh Norman? Fabian Moreau? The unstoppable Quinton Dunbar?
No, no, and no. It was the 2018 seventh-round pick. Greg Stroman.
Granted, Pro Football Focus’ grades aren’t the end-all when it comes to evaluating players, but they aren’t to be discarded, either. So when Pro Football Focus says that Greg Stroman topped his team’s position group with a cumulative defensive grade of 70.0, it’s worth noting.
It’s also worth noting how inconsistent as a whole the Redskins secondary was, but that’s besides the point at hand. Stroman, a seventh-round pick, was forced to come in and produce when Dunbar went down. And while he was streaky, as a late-round rookie should be expected to be, he displayed unusual confidence for a first-year player. He logged an interception and three pass deflections as a key reserve.
When he was tested, Stroman didn’t often break. Against the Giants, in the first matchup, he was targeted eight times, but only allowed four catches and deflected two passes. He was targeted eight times against the Buccaneers, and notched an interception in the process. It’s these nuggets that show how well Stroman performed, given his relatively short time window to prepare himself for a larger role. Stroman should, at the very least, have a roster spot in tow for the foreseeable future.
