3. WR Jamison Crowder

Two years ago, it seemed like Crowder was en route to becoming the Redskins’ top receiving target. Now, there are questions over just how much he is worth and whether or not the team will bring him back.

The Redskins were devoid of receiving talent last year, and Crowder’s absence played a role in that. Crowder missed a huge chunk of the season dealing with an injury and as a result, he had his worst season to date. He logged just 29 catches for 388 yards and two scores in nine games. He will need to improve greatly in 2019 if he wants to live up to whatever contract he ends up signing.

Jay Gruden spoke highly of Crowder earlier this month, per ESPN’s John Keim. Here’s what he said about Crowder’s ability and the team’s efforts to re-sign him.

More from Commanders Free Agency

"He’s got great quickness in intermediate routes, can separate, has good hands, he’s tough, he’s physical in the running game. There is really not anything that Jamison can’t do. You look at his size and say he’s little, but he plays big, so we have to try and get him back for sure."

While Gruden’s words carry weight, there are two things that will make an impact on the team’s decision. The first is the aforementioned long-term injury Crowder dealt with, as well as his struggles with consistency over the course of the past two seasons. That could drive down his value a bit in the eyes of the team, and they will want to avoid overpaying for him because of those issues.

Also, the 2019 NFL Draft is fairly deep at receiver, and there are numerous quality Day 2 candidates that the team could land to help replace Crowder. They may ultimately want to go after a guy like Andy Isabella from UMass or Terry Godwin of Georgia to help fill in, and they may decide to spend their money elsewhere. That will definitely be something to watch as the time to make a decision draws nearer.
