Pernell McPhee

The Washington Redskins signed Pernell McPhee to be solid depth for their edge rushing unit, and the former Chicago Bear didn’t disappoint.

According to data gathered from Pro Football Focus, McPhee, in 117 pass rushing snaps, logged 15 total hurries, good for a 12.8 pass rush productivity rating. None of McPhee’s hurries amounted to sacks, but the veteran was disruptive, hitting the quarterback eight times and batting the ball at the line twice.

McPhee, over the course of his career, has never been the type of rusher who churns out sacks. Like another rather polarizing player on the team, McPhee’s value comes in his disruptive consistency, his well-rounded skill set which allows him to defend the run just as well, and, in addition to the similar traits, his leadership, which helped the locker room at times in 2018.

McPhee might not return in 2019; the Redskins still have to re-sign him, as he is an unrestricted free agent. But McPhee gave them good reason to do so in 2018. He was productive as a reserve, and valuable as an experienced mind.
