Austin Howard

There was a very small, very brief moment during the 2018 Redskins season when there was a bit of hype building around Washington’s guard duo of Ty Nsekhe and Austin Howard. Jay Gruden himself talked up the pair during a press conference, referencing their composite size as a bonus for the team’s hobbling offensive line.

Size is great, and in the Redskins’ defense, signing Howard to solve their wide-ranging problems wasn’t a bad decision. He’s big, has starting experience, as well as experience at both guard and tackle.

That said, Howard didn’t do the Redskins any favors. In five games, one start, and just 37 total snaps, he allowed two sacks, proving to be a liability on the interior. As a reserve, the expectations are low. And Howard failed to meet them.
